Sidewinder Pant

Regular price $16.50

Unit price per

A simply constructed pant with a side seam that wraps the leg in diagonal line to flatter and streamline. The angled seam encompasses the easy-sew front internal pocket. The Sidewinder pants are pull on, with minimal back gather and easily constructed without buttons, zips or fastenings.

With a lightly tapered leg, these pants are designed to be worn just above the ankle with either a standard, fold up or deep gathered hem. The Sidewinders look just as flattering in the full length trouser option.

A perfect pattern for your first trousers - ideal for confident beginners.

  • Fold under hem in 7/8 or full length.
  • Gathered hem in 7/8 or full length.

Please refer to the FABRIC REQUIREMENT CHART as one of the last images on this product listing. You can magnify this image if viewing it on a mobile phone whilst in a fabric store.

Designed for mid weight WOVEN fabrics, the Sidewinder Pants work well in polyester, viscose, tencel, linen and cotton blends. The pattern also has good results  in a light weight wool blend suiting for colder temperatures.  Keep in mind that a mid weight fabric that drapes well is preferred. If the fabric is too heavy or stiff the back waist gather will not flatter.

Patterned fabric - The side seam is a key design feature and important to keep in mind when choosing your fabric. Jacquards, small prints and plain (block colour) are the easiest to sew. Plaids also look good (refer sample images) but are best matched at the side seam (intermediate sewers will find this easy enough and there is a tutorial to help here).

Sample images- our grey plaid sample is our stand out favourite and is constructed in a polyester/viscose weave with 2% spandex. The spandex is not essential but the fabric drapes beautifully, moves well and is easy to sew. The Sidewinder pants are designed for non-stretch woven fabrics so we do recommend you consider sewing down a size if you are using fabric with stretch.

Confident Beginner (2/5).
The Sidewinder pants can be sewn with or without an overlocker (serger) to neaten the seams.

Please note that if you are in doubt, please choose the size depending on your HIP measurement. Choose your hip measure closest to the size chart in the first instance (and then refer to the finished measure chart for the amount of ease if you are "in between" sizes).

These pants have a gathered rear waistband (flat front) so the waist is easily adjustable. The hip measure should decide the size.

Each purchase comes with 4 sizes (please refer to the last image for size chart and international size comparisons). Hover over the image to magnify.

1. Instructions

2. PAH Pattern file (PAH=Print at home)
For printing in A4 or US Letter on a home printer. Printing at home is the most cost-effective, and sticking your pattern tiles together to make your full size pattern is easy. Further information for printing at home can be found in our Resources section here.

3. AO Pattern file
AO is a large scale file designed to be printed at a Print Copy Shop. You cannot print this on your home printer as it is too big. If you choose to use this large file you will pay extra to have it printed but you do not have to stick anything together.

You can use the ADOBE LAYERS FEATURE to open the PAH pattern file and print only the size you need (and eliminate the "noise" of the unwanted sizes). You can also use the URL and bookmark links within the file to quickly access information and support. Download Adobe Reader for free (for Windows and Mac) here.

Fun to make trousers

I really enjoyed making these trousers because they were unlike any trousers I had made before. Such an interesting construction. They fit beautifully and sit nicely across my tummy I love the side seams, quirky and different!

Everything was easy and straight forward, I haven’t done any dressmaking for years but this pattern restored my confidence. The trousers look really professional and are comfortable as well as stylish.

Pattern was clear and easy to follow. Wearable toile PJ pants came out well. I will make some minimal adjustments for my flat bum and so the flattering flat front panel sits fractionally lower on my sore round belly. My only criticism is that the pockets aren't deep enough to put stuff without it falling out. Nice pants!

I love the Sidewinder Pattern. I have been trying to find a pants pattern that actually fits and these pants fit the bill, they fit beautifully. The Sidewinder Pants and Heron Top make a great outfit that I feel comfortable and smart wearing. I am waiting to get some more material to make another pair. Also my daughter has asked me to make her a pair also. Highly recommend this pattern. Marion J

I am extremely happy with the pattern and the instructions and the detail that went into using the pattern, down to how to cut and layout the printed pattern pieces. It is evident that a lot of thought went into the functionality of the end user.

Maybe it’s me….

The pattern seemed great, but I didn’t get a fit I liked. I may never wear the pants I made. The fabric I used may be part of the problem, and I considered this make a toile. The legs were too baggy and I shortened the pants by 9”, as I am 5’2”. I wanted a shorter pant and feel it could be even shorter. If the legs were less baggy I would like the fit a lot more on me.

Quick, fun, well-fitting pants

These were a quick make with nice results. I made mine in “lava linen” from Fabricana in BC. I’ve got a second pair lined up and ready to go.

Simply AWESOME!!!! Will be making a ton of these this summer.

I want to start off by saying that I have NEVER sewn a pair of pants that fit me right out of the box. I have big butt and thighs. I followed the instructions and used my full hip measurement to determine which size to make. I only checked the length measurements to make sure I was in the right ball part to make a test muslin. I did add a little bit of length to the back crotch as this is a fix I usually have to make (big butt). Sewing these pants takes very little time and the pattern drafting is excellent. All marks line up perfectly and the 1 cm seam allowance is fantastic, I've always thought that 5/8 inch is way too much for a seam allowance. Highly highly recommended!!!!

Great. Simple pattern, goos instructions and nice details in side seams and pockets. I was between sizes so went up a size which didn’t fit well. After requesting advice from Janine I remade the smaller size which fitted the way I expected them too. Wearing them right now!

Made 2 pairs of pants from this pattern, one in chambray, informal with elastic cuff, and one in a black silky suiting fabric. I found that for the suiting fabric, more formal, I needed to make the smaller size. The pattern was good and the instructions excellent!!

…the pattern is really nice, like the design. If you are experienced you can work through, I had major problems with the sizes…

The Sewing Revival

Hi Susanne, if in doubt we suggest you simply take your standard RTW (ready to wear) sizing (ie - the size you usually purchase in a store) as our sizes are pretty standard. If you are happy to send me your hip and waist size I can point you in hte right direction. Kind regards, Janine

Have wanted to have a go at this pattern for a while - and I love it. Was slightly sceptical about the slippery slope of elastic waist trousers - but these are really well fitting about the hips so they don’t look at all saggy. The twisting side seam is the thing about this pattern and it works really well - going from the pocket at the front then round passing the side point at the knee then carrying on towards the back finishing at the centre back at the ankle. I’ve top stitched this seam to make it stand out - and on the second pair (which I started this week) I have added a flat piping on that side seam to make it stand out even more. I think I will love these trousers!!!

Fab pants!!

Fabulous pattern and a very flattering style, fitting perfectly first time with the only adjustment being a bit more length in the leg. Next time I might add another half inc to the waist height. I used a Liberty print cotton for lightweight summer pants and they are just what I wanted - 'just like a bought one'. My fabric was highly patterned so I am looking forward to making another pair so the ‘sidewinder’ side seam is more of a visible feature.

Great pattern to take you from casual to workwear.

The pattern drafting is great and the method of constructing the pockets is really clever and neat. I added piping to the sidewinder seam to show it off. My new favourite go-to pattern for all kinds of trousers.
