Rookie Wrap Skirt (Youth)
$14.50
Size GuideA simple and classic wrap skirt perfect for beginners.
Fully lined with optional rear pockets this pattern is not only easy to make but is also a adjustable fit, accommodating all figure types.
For beginners we recommend the external fastening with a button and elastic loop (no need for button holes) but you can also use fabric ties, D rings or buckle. With a velcro internal fastening and full lining the skirt could also be reversible.
Using plain or patterned fabric the pattern can make up a skirt for every day wear or dress it up with heels for special occasions.

- SKIRT OUTER FABRIC:
Any form of woven fabric will suit this skirt so have a bit of fun using heavier weight woven fabric for winter and lighter weights (not flimsy) for summer. We recommend cotton and cotton blends, cotton drill, velvet (non stretch), corduroy or even light weight upholstery fabrics. As long as the fabric is not stretch, you can use just about anything.
Our orange floral sample is made up in cotton weave (it is retro fabric we found at a second hand store) and the paisey fabric with border is a heavier nylon/cotton blend. The 2 blue skirts are a cotton and a cotton blend and are heavier weight (but not upholstery weight).
SKIRT LINING
Use a lighter weight woven for the lining. We used 100% cottonupcycled retro sheets because they are cheap and fun and we are doing or bit for recycling.
*Please also note that all (new) fabric should be pre-washed in case of shrinkage. Some fabrics will not shrink but 100% cotton, linen and rayon are almost guaranteed to shrink. It doesn't hurt to be safe and remove any dodgy chemical build up that may have occurred during printing anyway.

We recommend that you also measure your body length and compare to the finished garment length measurements given. To achieve a perfect, individual fit, you may need to adjust the patterns length (instructions included).

WINTER WEIGHT:
Heavy knits like fleece cotton*, polar fleece, merino wool and wool mixes (for a winter hoody)
Our grey sample is made up in cotton sweat shirting and embellished with a second-hand crochet table cloth, the knit hoody was sewn from a polyester/acrylic knit.
SUMMER WEIGHT:
You may like to use a cotton or lightweight fabric to make a summer style hoody. This looks good cropped at the waist with a drawstring gather. Cotton, linens and cotton/polyester/rayon mixes are great for this but note that you might like to choose a larger pattern size than normal as woven fabrics do not stretch. Click the "Style Options" tab to learn more about the pattern variations.
The pink Crop Hoody & the green summer weight full length hoody have been made from sheets we found at the second hand store.

- This pattern is extremely versatile, made with or without the hood, winter or summer weight fabric, and either at full length or cropped.
Notes for woven fabric:
If you are planning to make the hoody in a summer weight fabric (like woven cotton) then you need to be mindful that a woven fabric does not stretch. There ware 2 ways to address this:
(a) you can cut out your bodice pieces slightly larger, by adding 1cm (3/8") more to the centre front and centre back or,
(b) use a pattern one size bigger than you normally would, and adjust the sleeve and body length to fit when hemming.
Style Variations:
Full length or cropped
With or without the hood
Elasticated cuffs or stretch knit
Warm knit and/or fleece fabric or a totally different look in lightweight wovensContrast sleeves, hood linings and cuffs
Embellished
Hoody dress - this pattern is able to be "hacked" by simply extending the length of the hoody.

Light to medium weight fabrics that have a soft drape.
Our dress sample is made up in rayon, the shirt sample in a polyester crepe.
We recommend:
Rayon*, Cotton blends (cotton/viscose and cotton/polyester), Crepe de chine.
Light weight linen*.
*be sure to pre-wash fabrics like rayon, linen and cotton which can shrink up to 10%. You will need to take this into account when buying your fabric.

If you are an "in between" size, please note this pattern is quite flexible. If you prefer a fuller dress go 1 size up (and adjust the hem length once the garment is sewn). Alternatively, if you prefer the dress not so full, drop down a size, but be sure to adjust the length - measure the back of your neck to the desired hem length and compare with the bodice length on the pattern. Cut the fabric longer (remembering to add 3 cm for hem allowance).
